Rene Dings

‘Everything under one roof, that is the strength of FloraHolland.’

The 25th edition of the Trade Fair Aalsmeer is a milestone in the sector. It is a great moment to reminisce and look to the future. We do this together with exhibitors, visitors and the organisation. “Connect to grow” is what the fair is all about and what also emerges from the stories. René Dings: ‘This fair is indispensable to me. Not only are contacts made here, but real business is done. Everything under one roof, that is the strength of FloraHolland.’

As a twelve-year-old grower's son, René Dings was already walking around the predecessor of the Trade Fair Aalsmeer, then known as the “Flower Trade Exhibition”. He is now 62 years old and has been a buyer for 39 years, 32 of which have been at Intermarkt Thielen. “I think I've been there every year,” he recalls.

Everything under one roof

As a plant buyer, René's favourite stands are those selling plants, although the flower stands are also a feast for the node. ‘The great thing about this fair is that you can see so many products, gather so much information and meet so many people in such a short space of time. If you had to visit all these growers individually, it would take you weeks. I definitely come here for inspiration. Although the wheel isn't being reinvented here, you always see new ideas and products.’

Inspiration and innovation on the exhibition floor

The plant stands are very important to Intermarkt Thielen and their customers. ‘New products can be added to the range, although this is often at the expense of existing varieties, as our customers only have a limited number of plant tables.’ The trade fair is also a place where major steps are taken: ‘We have found new growers and products here, as well as innovations such as new pot sizes and colours. That is very important for our customers.’

Industry developments in recent years

René particularly notices how quickly the sector is changing. ‘Whereas we used to buy everything through the clock, now there is also direct sales and brokerage. The shift from chemical to biological pest control is also striking, as is the increasing efficiency of logistics. In addition, you see the rise of internet sales and AI. Personally, I find the latter quite exciting, but that may have something to do with my age.’

Looking ahead to November

What does he hope to see this year? ‘Lots of satisfied and happy people who are enthusiastic about our wonderful flower and plant industry again. And hopefully lots of young people who want to take up the baton.’
