Royal FloraHolland is organising the Greenovation Award for the fifth time. This award stands for the best sustainable product or concept introduction in floriculture this year. Will your company win the anniversary edition?

Sustainable production and sustainable products are becoming the norm: the international consumer increasingly expects a sustainable product. Producers and traders are aware of the importance of this. Royal FloraHolland stimulates sustainable developments in the chain and therefore presents the 'Greenovation Award' during the Trade Fair Aalsmeer in November.

Professional and public jury

Suppliers and subcontractors with sustainably produced products or concepts can now apply for the 'Greenovation Award 2022'. A professional jury will assess the applications and decide which product or concept will be nominated for the Greenovation Award 2022. The jury consists of Maarten Banki (Manager Sustainable Development & Quality at Royal FloraHolland), Quincy von Bannisseht (Strategic Manager at Glastuinbouw Nederland) and Anne-Lotte Boudeling (CSR Officer at FM Group).

Points of attention include the originality of the innovation, practical applicability, positive impact on the environment and on society, and demonstrable sustainable business operations of the entrant. The nominations will be presented during the Trade Fair Aalsmeer, where the award ceremony will also take place.

The nominees and the winner will have an international stage where their sustainable product or concept will be presented. They will receive extra exposure in the run-up to the trade fair through the media of Royal FloraHolland. In news items, the professional public is called upon to vote for their favourite nominated product or concept. All nominated companies are then visible online. The winner is determined for 50% by the professional jury and for 50% by the online votes of the professional public.

Who succeeds Bernhard Plantenkwekerij?

Since November 2021, Bernhard Plantenkwekerij has been the proud winner of the Greenovation Award. Their award-winning Elegant Phalaenopsis line (butterfly orchid) is grown entirely sustainably in greenhouses heated with geothermal heat. This is produced via 45,000 floating solar panels in a water basin, where the energy generated by the solar panels is used to power the geothermal heat pumps. The combination of solar panels and geothermal energy is unique in the Netherlands. According to the jury, this concept makes an enormous contribution to the floriculture sector's biggest sustainability challenge: becoming climate-neutral.

Not all entries have to be great. Sustainable packaging for flower food and plants in fully biodegradable pots could also be the innovation that the jury is falling for. Or how about the efficient collection and recycling of plastic waste and sustainable irrigation with solar energy.

Royal FloraHolland is working on a future-proof floriculture industry in which flowers and plants are grown and traded with respect for mankind and the environment. Making the sector more sustainable is essential if it is to remain successful in the future. With this award, we wish to draw attention to all the wonderful product and concept innovations that exist in terms of sustainability. In order to work on making the international floriculture industry more sustainable, growers, the trade, Royal FloraHolland, industry organisations, certification bodies and NGOs have all united under the umbrella of the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI). These parties have the joint ambition that, by 2025, at least 90% of the flowers and plants purchased and traded by FSI members will be sustainable. The Trade Fair is a unique showcase of and for the cooperative and its exhibitors. Exhibitors and growers who are at the forefront of sustainable innovation will receive a great deal of attention from the international trade profession at the Trade Fair Aalsmeer as a result of being nominated for the Greenovation Award.
